In 1958, the Louisiana Garden Club Federation, Inc. (LGCF) was first among members of the National Garden Clubs, Inc. to sponsor a state wide “Cleanest City Contest.” The aim of the contest is to instill civic pride in the individual citizens and thus, improve the appearance of towns and cities. The City of Pineville recognizes winning the Cleanest City Award is essential for the economic growth and the well being of its citizens. Earning the award is a total team effort.
"This award is a victory for all city employees and our citizens. It is something we take seriously and work hard for every year. It’s part of who we are as a community, not just quality of life...but quality of place," says Mayor Clarence Fields. "Hats off to our Public Works Department, the Pineville Beautification Committee and the Alexandria Garden Club. It is obvious that our citizens and employees share the same sense of passion and pride in our community and this award validates what can be accomplished when we work together."
Each year cities in Louisiana compete against other cities of comparable size for the annual award presented by the LGCF. As part of the statewide competition, judges tour Pineville to assess cleanliness in residential areas, businesses, streets and sidewalks, parks, schools, cemeteries, and other buildings.
